Q&A: How Can I Stay Productive Working Long Hours?
It’s midday, and you can feel you focus drifting. You’re thinking about what you’re going to make for dinner or where you’re going to go this weekend. Your eyes are glued to the computer screen, but you’re not absorbing any of the information you see there.
It’s time to shake things up.
The biggest mistake you can make when you’re trying to stay productive throughout a long workday is to stick to a single task after you’ve lost interest or have hit a mental roadblock.
At that point, you’re no longer coming up with new ideas or producing your best work. You’re just trying to get it over with, but the longer you look at it, the more impossible that seems.
That’s why, when I start to feel unfocused or unmotivated about a certain project, I switch to something else. Once I get bored with that, I switch back.
Your brain is remarkably great at working out problems even when you’re not actively thinking about them. That’s why so many people suggest taking a break to stretch or go for a walk to reinvigorate your creative energy. I, on the other hand, just prefer to switch up what I’m working on. That way, I can cover a lot of ground during the day and keep working far past when others would want to call it quits.
