Q&A: What Should All Entrepreneurs Know About Marketing?

People don’t care about your start-up. I’m sorry, but that’s the truth. Hundreds of thousands of start-ups are created each year. What makes yours so special?

I don’t say this to be mean but rather to emphasize that, generally, people aren’t going to care about your business as a concept. To them, it’s just a faceless entity that may or may not even be around by this time next year. It’s up to you to make them care and get them invested in your success.

That’s why your best marketing tool as an entrepreneur is your personal brand.

If you want people to care about your startup or small business, you need to show them the face behind it. What are your ideals? What’s it like running the business? What are your challenges? Your triumphs?

Sharing your stories—through blog posts, social media, YouTube, whatever you’re most comfortable with—is key to getting others invested in your business’s success. By creating that relationship between yourself and your audience, letting them into the behind-the-scenes details of your entrepreneurial endeavors, you’re not just creating customers. You’re creating fans.
