Spice Up Your Instagram Stories with Stickers
Instagram stories are just downright fun to play with. Filters, fonts, video styles, stickers—you can easily waste an afternoon just trying out all the cool features.
You might, however, overlook how these add-ons can play into your overall content marketing strategy. After all, why would you need to add a bunny ears filter to your product images?
But don’t be fooled by the wacky filters and goofy emojis! IG stories are actually a powerful marketing tool, and some of those “silly” features actually have a lot of brand-boosting potential.
Today, we’re going to give a special shout-out to IG stickers and give you some tips to incorporate them seamlessly into your social media strategy.
What are IG Stickers?
Instagram introduced stickers in 2016 as an answer to Snapchat’s geofilters, which are geographically specific images you can lay over your snaps. Now, stickers are now a mainstay of the popular photo-sharing site.
Since then, Instagram has rolled out different varieties of stickers that let you add interactive and creative elements to your stories. But user beware! If done incorrectly, incorporating stickers can make your story look juvenile or overwrought. That’s why it pays to be strategic in incorporating stickers into your IG Story. Keep it to 1-2 stickers maximum per story, and choose your stickers wisely.
How to Add Stickers to Your IG Stories
In case you’re new to IG Stories, let’s take a quick minute to go through the simple steps to add stickers to an Instagram story.
- To create a new Story, go to your Home Feed, and tap on the camera icon at the top left of the screen.
- Take a new picture or upload one from your camera roll.
- Click the peeling smiley face icon located at the top right of the screen.
- Scroll through the stickers, and choose the one you want to use.
- Once your sticker is added to your picture, you can move it around, add text, or change the size.
At the top of the sticker list, you’ll see the more advanced options like polls, gifs, hashtags, mentions, etc. Under that, there will be a long list of simple emojis, seasonal stickers, and mood stickers.
Creative Marketing Ideas for Instagram Stickers
1. Get Audience Input with Poll Stickers
Users can choose between 2 answers. By default, these two options will be yes and no, but you can edit the options. Not only can you and your followers see the results in real-time, you’ll also be able to see exactly who voted for each option.
2. Encourage Interactions with Question Stickers
Question stickers let you type in a prompt that people can respond to. Ask a question about your products, like “What’s your favorite item on our menu?”
Or flip the format on its head, and do an AMA (Ask Me Anything). Tell your followers to ask you a question, and give them a chance to ask you whatever they want about you or your brand.
3. Promote Your Brand with Hashtag Stickers
You can also choose to include a clickable hashtag sticker to your story, which, when tapped, will take the user to the hashtag’s feed. This is especially helpful for promoting branded hashtags.
4. Bring in Other IG Users with Mention Stickers
Mention stickers allow you to tag another user in your stories. Users can then tap the sticker to go directly to that user’s feed. When you publish your story, the mentioned user will receive a notification.
5. Reach out to the Locals with Location Stickers
Make yourself more visible within your local community by adding a location sticker to your story. When a user clicks on a location tag, they’ll see a feed with all the stories that feature that same location tag. Make sure that you’re included in the local lineup and make your presence known with a location sticker.
